Underpants and Cycling
The Big Question - Do I wear Underpants under bicycle shorts?
The answer is no. Bicycle shorts are designed with a special insert inside that is seamless and padded. It is designed to protect you from your bike seat and from friction that is a result of the constant movement associated with riding. The seams of underpants can dig into your skin causing chafing. Most commonly underpants are made from cotton which will become wet with sweat and cause chafing.
Isn't it unhygenic to ride without underpants? No, most inserts in shorts have an antibacterial treatment and there are cremes to use on your insert (chamois) that further reduce friction and provide a higher level of antibacterial conditioning. It is important to wash your shorts after each ride.
